Dear Sherri,
1. The most effective method is to use a screen (where possible). Otherwise, an `average' alternative is to use plants on both sides of the stairs. Or hang a beaded screen above the ceiling down (the effect is to screen the stairs from the main entrance
2. For the toilet above, close the door when not in use.
